Kids are more then welcome!
After I discovered the Family Luxury Hotels I immediately thought: I WANT TO GO THERE! RIGHT NOW! Oh my God, it’s fantastic.
Nigel Chapman founded the Family Luxury Hotel Group at the beginning of 2000. Being a dad himself, he realized how difficult it was to find a place for a relaxed holiday with the family in England. And so he went on to found the Family Luxury Hotels which are spread out all over Britain. There are eight of them already, one more beautiful than the other.
We opted for the Polurrian Bay Hotel iI have longed to visit the south coast of England and was looking forward to some Rosamunde Pilcher role play.
We took the train to Truro from London. The route was along the picturesque coastlines for four and a half hours. It was a lot more agreeable than taking the trains of the Deutsche Bahn since the food was surprisingly good and the service personnel seemed to have been trained in dealing with children. Taking the car takes about the same amount of time and you have to be fine with serpentines which neither Sam nor myself are.
Once you’ve finally reached the hotel any train journey (and most likely any serpentine) are forgotten! The hotel is located right next to a cliff line and as soon as you set foot on the property you are indefensibly and eternally captivated! The view! The garden! The style! A place to happily linger.
My ability to relax goes up measurably when I’m cradled amongst beautiful cushions in fine covers. Since that is a luxury you can hardly find in hotels that are suitable for children.
The Polurrian Bay gets it right with the perfect mix: You get to please design aficionados like myself, and at the same time it is not expected that the cushions remain perfectly in place or lose their washed and pressed state. As soon as we got there Sam built a fortress of cushions with two other kids and was promptly praised by the staff: ‚Good job!‘
From the great conservatory ‚Vista‘ you have a view over the open sea, the bay, the playground and the tennis courts.
While swinging on the swing it’s almost as if you could take off and fly across the sea. Since England is not exactly famed for predictable weather, there is a beautiful kindergarten with enchanting child minders. Generally the hotel provides you with everything you could possibly need when you’re on holiday with children: cots, high chairs, beach toys, a stool for the bathroom and whatever else you could think of.
In 2012 the hotel was renovated. The emphasis was less on the infrastructure of the building and more on the fact that the fabrics and covers are of fine quality. The right decision if you ask me.
The beds are incredibly comfy, the bedding and pillows are exquisite and the bathrooms have been newly equipped. Not to forget the view from our room which is an optical sensation.
Breakfast is inclusive. You can also have lunch and dinner either in the Vista (that’s convenient because of the children’s toys) or you can dine in the stunning dining room. And naturally with a view like that the English breakfast tea is twice as nice.
Every room has it’s own baby monitor. Marc and I were happy to leave the spaghetti battle behind us and reappear in new attire in the restaurant to appreciate the sunset with a good glass of wine.
The hotel is surrounded by are magical garden. Sam particularly enjoyed the part that was specifically created for the fairies and pixies. He spent hours sitting in front of the small gate, at the bottom of the picture, and kept moving the little red and white fence so the fairies wouldn’t fall.
You can walk for hours along the cliffs past small coves, pirate rocks and ports. Sam climbed along the coves for hours armed with his bucket and shovel searching for shells and sharks.
There is a small pool (with a a whirlpool and baby pool) an exercise room and really good treatments in the spa. After I had a 75 minute full body massage I was so very relaxed that I barely made it to high tea.
Luckily the sofa is large and soft and nobody cares if you lose your composure and sink into the cushions.
Apart from the location (next to the cliffs) the hotel stands out because of it’s incredibly friendly staff. When Sam was a bit disappointed after returning from the beach with an empty bucket, he couldn’t find any shells because of the current, the receptionist comforted him.
The next day she gave him a bag full of shells she had collected the previous summer. The restaurants in the village are very welcoming. When Sam asked a waiter if he also had fairies in his garden he said: of course.
If you want to leave the hotel for a while to explore the area you should definitely visit the chocolate factory in Mullion. If you walk from the hotel along the steep coast you get there in about 20 minutes. Unless there are helicopters hovering overhead (Mummy, want to watch!) or the lamas on the way need feeding. Once you’re there you can buy handmade chocolate and watch the manufacturing. There is a small cafe next door offering delicious Paninis, salads as well as a children’s menue. You can also find small souvenir shops in the surroundings.
You can go for a nice lunch in the pubs in Mullion. We went to the Mounts Bay Inn. You have to ignore the interior decoration, because you can get delicious local cusine. Ans kids are more then welcome!
If we’d had more time we could have discovered a great deal more in the area: St. Ives (with its very own Tate Gallery!) or the Cornish Seal Sanctuary for example. This was not are last visit, that is for sure! Polurrian Bay, we will be back!
