Rock Villa, we’ ll be back!
Ahm, hang on, isn’t this the way to our Marigold Hotel?“ I ask Marc slightly baffled, as our driver turns into the byroad leading to our hotel. However before Marc can answer the driver turns left again and we find ourselves in front of a gigantic gate. Screw the arc of suspense I’m getting straight to the point. Behind the gate you will find paradise – the Hotel Rock Villa!
Marc the old truffle pig had been surfing the internet while we were in Galle and found this jewel of a hotel for our last four days in Sri Lanka.
In fact Rock Villa is situated right next to Club Villa Bentota. Sam and I had sneaked a peak at the magnificent garden and I was convinced that it was a private estate. It felt so intimate so sheltered.
I was right in some ways, Rock Villa has only been a hotel for two years. Before that it was the private beach house of the Sri Lankan design queen Nayantara „Taru“ Fonsenka.
Taru was one of the pioneers who brought the concept of the boutique hotels to the south of Sri Lanka: Smal, delicate hotels which give their guests the feeling of being in a home away from home.
With Rock Villa she managed to create a rare combination. It is completely styled yet incredibly beautiful. However as a guest you are never worried to lounge around on the designer sofa. Every vase and every chair has been perfectly chosen and yet it still feels laid-back.
The boutique hotel is comprised of only four rooms and one suite with two bedrooms. If you travel with a big family or with friends you should definitely consider renting the suite. It has two huge bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a vast dining and lounge area and a kitchen. To be honest that is simply ideal if you travel with small children and have to heat up a bottle of milk at 6am.
Apart from that there is no credible reason to prepare your own food.
The cuisine is spectacular and leaves nothing to the imagination. All the products are fresh and the vegetables and herbs are grown in the vegetable garden. It is organic of course.
Marc took notes on every dish. My favourite was and ist the fresh tuna with coriander on a bed of avocado. Any questions? Hot on the heels ist he fish barbeque with fresh crayfish, octopus and whatever else the sea served up that day. Sam was very happy with his chicken schnitzel in rosemary coating, rice , green beans and for desert passionfruit sorbet or crepe with homemade nut chocolate creme. As you can see we were terribly spoilt.
When the thought of an ice cold lime lemonade crossed your mind the staff was there and when you wanted to dreamily gaze at the enchanted garden they magically disappeared.
We were the only couple with a child and at first I was a bit worried that it was going to get stressful. The opposite happened. All the other guests patiently attended to Sam when he showed them his Playmobil dragon and the staff didn’t even raise an eyebrow when Sam turned the lounge into a castle.
They went on to take him into the kitchen so he could see how much time it would take to prepare his passionfruit sorbet.
Do you remember the train running through the garden of Club Villa Bentota? Being neighbours the train is audible here too. However Rock Villa is slightly offset and a big hedge shields the train tracks. You can occasionally hear the faint sound of someting that sounds like a sewing machine but that’s it.
Shortly in front of the gate leading to the beach there is a tombstone. The former owner of the estate is buried here. You get the impression that his benevolent spirit watches over the grounds.
When you return from the beach there is a large bowl of ayuverdic water by the stairs which you can pour over your legs.
I have no idea what exactly the ingredients are (nobody could or would explain it to me) but it feels fantastic and one feels like walking with Brigitte Bardot’s legs.
Naturally you can book massages and yoga classes. I treated myslef to a yoga class without knowing which teacher I would get. I had the pleasure of getting the same teacher as before. Do you remember? the one who exhausted me. This time my mat was in the shade and nobody could see me but the mosquitos came early anyway.
Oh and if you’re lucky you can see a little goanna crawling through the garden.
Rock Villa is one of the most fantastic places I have ever visited. It really is a jewel. If you are seeking solitude but don’t want to miss a degree of luxury this is your place. Rock Villa, we’ll be back! We simply have to pick a date and decide who to take with us.
